Jacob (Claesz.) van Utrecht
Utrecht c. 1479-after 1525), attributed to
Portrait of a young man with a vanity symbol, probably of a patrician of the Hanseatic town of Lübeck, with a scrole above the sitter, dated 1523 on the frame, oil on panel, 31.5 x 22.1 cm, framed
Provenance: Gallery P. de Boer, Amsterdam;
private collection, Malmö; auction, Christie’s, Amsterdam, 6 May 1998, lot 93. Hardly anything is known about the life of this important Netherlandish painter, who also signed with the name “Jacobus Traiectinus”. It was probably around 1500 that he became a citizen of the town of Antwerp. He is mentioned as a free master of the Antwerp-based Guild of St. Luke between 1506 and 1512. He left for northern Europe before 1519, where he is recorded as a member of the St. Leonard’s Brotherhood from 1519 to 1525. In 1520 he created his principal work, the “Kerckring altarpiece”, for the Lübeck councillor and merchant Hinrich Kerckring (ex Brederlo Collection, Riga, today on permanent loan to the St. Annen Museum in Lübeck). Portraits by Jacob van Utrecht (done between 1520 and 1524) are preserved at the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the National Museum in Stockholm, and the Collection of the Counts of Fürstenberg-Herdringen (Herdringen Castle/Westphalia).
